\ \ [16] Slogan is a Gaelic contribution to English. It comes from sluaghghairmwar-cry’, a compound formed from sluagharmy’ and ghairmshout’. English at first used it in its original Gaelic sense, and the metaphorical ‘catchphrase’ did not emerge until the 18th century.
