\ \ [13] Recoil has no connection with coil. In fact, etymologically it means virtually ‘withdraw backside first’, for it was coined in French on the basis of cularse, backside’. This went back to Latin cūlusarse’, which was probably related to Sanskrit kūla- ‘rearguard’.
