\ \ [13] Maze was originally a verb (now obsolete) meaning ‘daze’, which arose by shortening of amaze. When it was first used as a noun it meant ‘delusion, delirium’, and it was not until the late 14th century that it began to be used for a ‘structure of bewildering complexity’.
