\ \ [OE] Etymologically, hearth seems to mean ‘burning place’. It has been suggested that its West Germanic ancestor *kherthaz, which also produced German herd and Dutch haard, may be connected with Latin cremāreburn’ (source of English cremate [19]) and Lithuanian kurtiheat’.
