\ \ [17] Alcove is of Arabic origin. It reached English, via French alcôve and Spanish alcoba (where it means ‘recessed area for a bed’), from Arabic al-qobbahthe arch, the vault’, hence ‘the vaulted room’, which was derived from the verb qubbavault’.
