\ \ [15] In classical Greek, an ekklēsíā was anassembly’ (the word was derived from ekkalein, a compound verb formed from the prefix ek- ‘outand kalleincall’). With the introduction of Christianity, it was adopted as the term forchurch’, and an ekklēsiastés, originallysomeone who addressed an assembly’, became apreacherorpriest’. The derived adjective, ekklēsiastikos, passed into English via either French or Latin.
