chrysalis

chrysalis
\ \ [17] Etymologically, a chrysalis is a ‘gold’-coloured pupa, for the word derives ultimately from Greek khrūsósgold’. Many butterflies do have pupae that, at least to start with, have a metallic sheen of gold, so the Greeks applied to them the term khrūsallís, in which the final element seems to mean something like ‘sheath’. This passed into English via Latin chrysalis.
\ \ Also formed from Greek khrūsós (which is of Semitic origin) is chrysanthemum [16], which means literally ‘gold flower’.
